How to Be More Powerful

When things are not going well for you… when you feel stressed, frustrated, upset, or fearful, you need to shift into a more powerful state of being. Power is your ability to act in ways that support you, effectively respond to difficult situations, or create results that you desire or that work favorably for you. It is a way of being desirable at all times in life.

Power is commonly built on wisdom and discipline, but most especially on the ability to take appropriate action. Malcolm X, who was an American human rights activist, said this about the kind of power I’m speaking of:

Power in defense of freedom is greater than power in behalf of tyranny and oppression, because power, real power, comes from our conviction which produces action, uncompromising action.

How can you be more powerful? By tapping resources deep within you, the resources of being human and desiring to act effectively and appropriately to the occasion for yourself and for all those affected. Choose (that is, intend) power, and let your higher self respond through its inner knowing.

But when you feel stressed out or blocked by negative emotions, here is a technique that I have found works very well for me…

Choose to ignore anger or upset and instead feel self-love, then freedom, and then your own inherent power to respond consciously, creatively, and abundantly. That may sound simplistic, but once you learn to feel those states of being in sequence – self-love, freedom, power – you can dissipate stress quickly and change the results you are producing.

Deep within yourself, you know these states, these feelings, and can move into them even if you have forgotten them or have not experienced them lately.

First relax and shift your focus to feeling love for yourself in your mind and body. Take a few deep breaths and allow yourself to relax. Then consciously choose to feel the state of love for yourself.

Hold the intention of love, and you will feel love expanding within you and around you. As love expands you feel a sense of peace that love brings. It feels good and allows healing to begin. Love gives you space to draw on resources deep within you and to respond based on your natural, innate creativity and potential.

Now choose freedom. Freedom comes from releasing negative thoughts and allows you to respond without negative emotions such as fear or anger. When you choose freedom, you choose to create positive results (rather than fight negative emotions). Choose to feel the feelings of freedom… infinite possibilities, openness, creativeness, and positive outcomes.

Finally, choose power. Power is not power over other people, it is the power to respond to situations and to take action or create solutions with and for other people. Feel that kind of power. When you come from a place of power, you will leverage your strengths, see others as collaborators and partners, find answers or solutions more easily, and take appropriate actions with less effort. Choose to feel powerful and know that you are strong, creative, and capable.
