I have learned in the course of my life that the choices we make determine who we become and, ultimately, the life we experience. Our choices are the vital causes of our life, and they affect all parts of who we become, what we do, and what we have in terms of happiness, health, relationships, and success.
Especially important are the fundamental or spiritual choices in life. You will find, as I have – if you pursue the matter deeply enough – that life is spiritual whether you realize it or not. How you are in spirit means knowing who you really are, what you really believe is important, how you value others, and how you live your life. When you get in touch with your true nature—individual consciousness which is part of the Universal Consciousness—you get in touch with your true Self and your true power.
Do you think only about yourself? What you can get or have? Or do you think about yourself as part of a larger whole, of a community, of mankind, of life being created and lived? Do you think life should be lived grandly and with purpose, or do you just live it ordinarily, day to day, and without real meaning?
You have the power to create the life you would choose if you could. Most of us never learn that we have this power, let alone that we have the choice! Choices, as I say, are very power things. They determine who we become, most of our results in life, and how we interpret and relate to our results.
Choices can be made consciously or unconsciously. If you want to control your choices and make them wisely, you obviously will want to become fully aware of your choices. That is one of the reasons why great teachers teach the importance of present moment awareness. We are making continuous choices every day and every moment – whether to do this thing or something else, whether to pay attention to life or to zone out, whether to slip into easy habit or accept a new challenge that demands our attention and our focus, etc. I would advise you to expand your awareness and make choices consciously.
A choice is a kind of intention – but it is an intention with awareness of alternatives and openness to possibilities and options. When you consciously make a choice, you are deciding what you want to do or have and, in most cases, you are choosing both the action (the cause) and the effect simultaneously. You are choosing that specific action and effect over other actions and effects at that specific moment. You are choosing to believe that the action will produce the desired effect. This is a very powerful way of expressing your life.
Choosing, as I am using the term, is not a casual, half-hearted thing, it is deciding whole-heartedly, with all of your being, to be the result that you want in your life. When you choose with your whole self to be the result, that choice is the cause because the Universe is responsive to our thoughts and especially our choices.
Spiritual Take-Away: Pay attention to the fundamental choices you make in your life. In choosing your outcomes, you will be choosing how you create your life – what you have, what you do, and who you are. Practice choosing with awareness, with open mind and open heart. Choose well and fulfill your dreams!
