In my book, Awakening to Wholeness, which by the way is close to being finished, I talk a lot about “wholeness” because I think it is important to how we as individuals, and we collectively in organizations or in society, find success in life. So what is wholeness?
I have not yet found a simple, one sentence definition of wholeness that does it justice because it requires context and, to some degree, explanation of the theory of wholeness. But one starting point would be “Wholeness is the experience of health and completeness as a human being.” It requires adding that health and completeness is in “all aspects of one’s life” – that is, not just in terms of physical health, but also mental, spiritual, financial, emotional, and relational health, and in fact, experiencing satisfaction in how life is going for you, and knowing that your life has meaning and purpose. So when you say you feel a sense of wholeness, it means that you are happy and whole.
But wholeness is much, much more than that… for every aspect of our lives involves a web of wholistic relationships. We are part of a greater whole with each and every one of our relationships with others, and our relationship with work, and with society, political choices, the physical environment, the cultural environment, mankind, the Earth, the Universe, and with God. If we do not nurture and develop the wholistic relationships all around us, and especially if we neglect or worse, damage them, they tend to weaken and damage us; but if we do nurture them and make them stronger, they in turn strengthen and support us.
Being healthy in all aspects requires that we be aware and pay attention to our mind, body, relationships, and the environment (physical, mental, and spiritual) around us and make them healthier and happier so that they will make us healthier and happier.
But wholeness is even more than that… for wholeness begins with the fact that the Universe and Life are one whole. In spite of the “obvious” reality that we are individuals and physical things are separate and distinct, interacting apparently independently, and experiencing events separately and without visible connection, things really aren’t what they seem. We are interconnected within a vast and complex and subtle matrix of consciousness, and the quantum space-time field creates and adapts the flow of life continuously around us as we think our lives into existence and immediately interpret what is happening and what we think and feel about it.
The more you choose wholeness for yourself and others, and the more you seek to become aware of wholeness and experience it, the more wholeness will fill you and carry you towards your dreams. For wholeness is the Universe manifesting through the flow of Life, experiencing the Life of all beings within the whole of one universal being.
Wholeness may be somewhat mysterious, but it is desirable to all beings in this world, whether they know it or not.
May love and wholeness fill you always. Choose wholeness in all things, and YOU will change your life and the world around you for the better.
